Seventh Generation - 10 Things I Love!

Seventh Generation - 10 Things I Love

I first stumbled upon Seventh Generation while living in Canada almost 9 years ago now and instantly fell in love with this awesome natural cleaning products brand. So, here are the top 10 things I love most about Seventh Generation...

1. Awesome Name & Mission - Caring for the Next Seven Generations!

What's not to love? Seventh Generation derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy that states: "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations."

And their mission: "to inspire a revolution that nurtures the health of the next seven generations".

It really doesn't get any better than that!

2. Natural Cleaning Products that Work!

I have tried many different natural cleaning product brands over the years, but have often been disappointed with product performance - either the scents drove me crazy (not in a good way!) or there were residues left on my clothes or they didn't perform well in cold water, and the list goes on.

Seventh Generation's products have always worked brilliantly for me - I love the natural scents (more on that below) and they have never left residues on my clothes.

Plus they are specially formulated to work in cold water, which is a fantastic way to lower your overall energy consumption!

3. Free from Phosphates & Chlorine Bleach

All Seventh Generation products are phosphate and chlorine free, but why is this so important?

When phosphates go down the drain it doesn't take long for them to reach rivers, lakes, estuary's or oceans and they can cause significant damage to our waterways because phosphates act as fertilizers and, as such, can cause a rapid growth of algae thereby clogging our waterways and polluting our waterways [1].

When it comes to chlorine bleach in our waterways, one of the biggest issues is how the byproducts of chlorine (organochlorines and dioxins) persist and bio-accumulate in the environment (due to their non-biodegradable nature). It affects fish, animals that eat the fish and of course us (who eat both the fish and the animals), and can have substantial health risks associated with it. (For more info on the potential health risks see [2] and [3] below).

4. Formulated to Work in Cold Water

Its incredible to think that 80% of the energy in a warm wash is associated with heating the water. This means that choosing to wash your clothes in cold water uses less than 1/4 of the energy for warm washing [4].

All Seventh Generation laundry products are formulated to work in cold water and they have just embarked on a major education campaign to highlight the benefits of using cold water rather than warm or hot water for laundry loads to help households make the switch to cold water today!

5. Amazing Natural Scents from Essential Oils

As hinted at above, I am extremely sensitive to synthetic scents. For some reason they seem to go straight up my nose and coat my throat and sometimes I can even get flu like symptoms within a few hours of having smelled these scents (my worst is the cosmetics / perfume sections in department stores!!)

And yet despite this aversion to synthetic scents, I absolutely love pure essential oils and their scents!

And that's probably why I happily use all of Seventh Generation's scented products - because they use essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances to scent their products.

From the lavender that comes to Seventh Generation from a co-op in Drôme Provençale, France to their clementines from southern Italy, all of their scents have a story and the end product is a delight to people like me that love scents but just can't tolerate synthetic fragrances!

In addition, they even have a fantastic Free & Clear Unscented Range for people that cannot tolerate scents at all!

6. Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic Packaging

Seventh Generation have been an industry leader when it comes to using post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic packaging and in 2011 they introduced dozens of new products and sizes in 100% PCR bottles for their products [5].

Plus they are set to totally revolutionize their packaging away from plastic altogether with their goal of no plastic to waste by 2020 (see below).

7. No Plastic to Waste by 2020

When Seventh Generation first set out their bold goal of no plastic from their products or packaging going to landfills by 2020 [6] it seemed pretty inconceivable how they would achieve this.

However, one look at their incredible new compostable packaging for their 4X Baby Concentrate and 4x Free & Clear Laundry Concentrate signals the exciting innovations to come!

8. Get the Water Out: 50% Less Water in Products by 2020

One of the things I love most about Seventh Generation is their commitment to using less water in their products.

In fact between 2005 - 2011, concentrating their laundry products helped Seventh Generation achieve a 37% decrease in their use of water as a product ingredient [7].

In addition to saving water, these new concentrates also mean that fewer resources are needed to package and transport the same effective amount of product - talk about a win-win!

9. Helping their Employees with their Personal Sustainability

Seventh Generation offers two-tiers of interest-free loans of up to $5,000 (depending on employee salary range) for energy-efficient vehicles, home improvements or renewable energy installations.

The loans become grants after five years if the employee remains with the company. In 2011, Seventh Generation helped 13 employees with the purchase of eight hybrid cars and five home energy projects [8].

10. Every Seventh Generation Product You Use Makes A Difference!

The environmental savings from using Seventh Generation products are certainly starting to add up!

As at 19 January 2013, Seventh Generation products had saved 540,430 trees and 1,741,546 barrels (or 207,662,765 litres) of petroleum!
